Week 11

WOW... State Meets are upon us.  Coach Miner just got back from a damp day at Pats Peak, and is drying out gear in advance of this week's meets.  Time to double-check your gear. Are your skis sharpened and waxed? Ski socks washed, boots dried out?  Lucky underwear?  Whatever else you do before a meet... Do you carry the tools you need to put your chin guard on your helmet? Good luck, and GO SPARTANS!

Very important that we have two parents to help with course maintenance and gate judging for each state meet!  Plan to meet race officials at 8:30.

Week 9

A big round of applause for everyone after Friday's race.  We didn't get quite the results we would have liked, but it was only the second race of the season, and it's good to see everyone pushing their limits.  We've got a busy week of practices and races ahead of us.  Due to power problems last week, we had to cancel a practice last Tuesday, and right now, Coach Miner is leaning toward not making it up, just to give the athletes one more day of rest and a chance to catch up on academics. Two races this week, two races the next week, then the State Meets.

IMPORTANT DATES:

1/29 - GS Practice at Pats Peak. Bus departs promptly at 2:30pm.  We're on snow from 3:30 - 5:30.  Returning to Pembroke Academy around 6:30pm

?1/30 - SL Practice - We're going to end practice at 5pm, giving everyone a chance to relax and eat together in the Pats Peak Cafe before we head back to PA.

2/2 - GS & SL at Waterville Valley. Bus departs at 7:15am

Week 8

Coach Miner was in ski boots from 8:00am until 3:30pm... and maybe unlike most had to settle for listening to the big game as he drove first home, and then over to UNH and back to return his son to school.  He got to hear one of America's greatest teams come from behind and win another chance to play in the Super Bowl.  You might ask, how does this apply to skiing? Fair question... Coach Miner relates that we're in a "come from behind season", we've canceled two races, well, three if you count the one we rescheduled, and then had to cancel due to finals being changed at several schools.  So we're half-way through the season, but with the bulk of our competitions ahead of us!  Keep up the energy, and remember to train and race hard right through the end of the season!

IMPORTANT DATES:

1/22 - GS Practice at Pats Peak. Bus departs promptly at 2:30pm.  We're on snow from 3:30 - 5:30.  Returning to Pembroke Academy around 6:30pm

?1/23 - SL Practice

1/26 - GS & SL Race at Sunapee. Bus departs at 7:15am; Please be at PA and ready to go at 7:10.  For parents and others who want to watch a race, the Sunapee races are on "Eggbeater", ending right down by the lodge.  Just a short walk from the parking lot.

TO DO:

Stay healthy... with flu season, and the stress of academics it's important to get plenty of rest, and stick to a healthy diet!

UPCOMING EVENTS:

1/29 - GS Practice

1/30 - SL Practice

1/31 - Capitol Cup Slalom

Week 7

Mother Nature gets in the way, again.  The staff at Cranmore and the Kennet coaching staff decided that the warm weather last week was going to contribute to adverse snow conditions, and in the interest of safety, the race was canceled.

IMPORTANT DATES:

1/16 - SL Practice at Pats Peak. Bus departs promptly at 2:30pm.  We're on snow from 3:30 - 5:30.  Returning to Pembroke Academy around 6:30pm

TO DO:

Keep up with academics! Finals Week is upon us!

UPCOMING EVENTS:

1/22 GS Practice

1/23 SL Practice

1/24 SL Race at Pats Peak, 3pm.  This replaces the GS we originally scheduled on 1/5. Pembroke and Lebanon will co-host.

1/26 GS & SL at Sunapee

Week 6

Snow and cold are a mixed blessing when it comes to racing.  The deep cold and high winds presented a potential frost bite situation, especially with athletes just standing around at the top of course waiting for their runs.  Coach Miner knows that everyone really wanted to run a race, but sometimes Mother Nature gets in the way.  We will potentially reschedule later in the season.

IMPORTANT DATES:

1/8 - GS Practice at Pats Peak. Bus departs promptly at 2:30pm.  We're on snow from 3:30 - 5:30.  Returning to Pembroke Academy around 6:30pm

1/9 - SL Practice at Pats Peak.

1/12 - GS+SL Race at Cranmore. Departing from Pembroke Academy at 6:30am

TO DO:

Keep up with academics! Next week is Finals Week!

UPCOMING EVENTS:

1/16 SL Practice

Week 5

Happy New Year!  Coach Miner just finished up ten days of skiing, skipping Christmas.  The weather has been pretty cold, and dressing properly is critical. We're looking forward to getting the team on snow this week.

After the Race Camp on Dec 22, one Pats Peak guest informed me that she and her young children had heard some inappropriate language from the group while the coaches were not present.  Please remember that you're representing Pembroke Academy, and such behavior will not be tolerated.

IMPORTANT DATES:

1/2 - GS Practice at Pats Peak. Bus departs promptly at 2:30pm.  We're on snow from 3:30 - 5:30.  Returning to Pembroke Academy around 6:30pm

1/5 - GS Race at Pats Peak. Dismissal at 12:50, bus departs promptly at 1pm.  We need several parents to help out with this event.  Please email Coach Miner if you can be available by 2pm at Pats Peak. He'd like to pair up new parents with some of our experienced parents.  Help is needed at the top of the course to start the race, and at the bottom to manage the finish.  If you're skiing, lift tickets will be provided.

TO DO:

Keep up with academics!

UPCOMING EVENTS:

1/8 - GS Practice

1/9 - SL Practice

1/12 - GS and SL at Cranmore

Dry Land Practice

All athletes must be signed up via FamilyID, before they can practice with the team.

Practices will be held at Pembroke Academy on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 3pm until 4:30pm, starting the Monday after Thanksgiving break. The team will meet in the hallway outside of the weight room. Expect to practice outside, weather permitting. Dress accordingly, and be sure to bring a water bottle.

Sports Night

Winter Sports Awareness Night is being held on Thursday, November 30th at 7pm We will be having a brief team meeting afterwards. It’s important that all athletes and parents attend, especially if this your first year on the team.

On Snow Practice

We will have eight on-snow practices at Pats Peak. The bus will depart Pembroke Academy at 2:30pm. Our training time is from 3:30pm until 5:30pm. The bus usually returns around 6:30pm

Race Schedule

The race schedule is available on the PembrokeAthletics.org website. This is updated directly out of the school’s scheduling software, and you’ll be notified of changes immediately. Two dates to keep in mind:

  • Thursday, December 21st – Giant Slalom @ Crotched Mountain

  • Friday, January 5th – Giant Slalom @ Pats Peak. This is our “Home Opener”, and we’ll need help from parents to run the race. It also is a “homecoming” of sorts, and hopefully some of our alumni will be on hand too.

Other Training

Again the year, Pats Peak is offering a one-day high school “race camp” to be held on Friday, December 22nd. You’ll get to ski with other high school racers, and work with some other coaches. Racers need to provide their own transportation. The cost is $10 cash on the day of the event.
